4 ELECTRICAL THERAPY TENS Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. The treatment consist of passing mild electrical impulses through your skin into the nerve fibres which lie below. Contact is made with skin via the electrodes. TENS electrodes are generally placed around the painful area, over the painful area or over acupuncture points. TENS is a highly effective treatment for pain. It is used worldwide and recommended by sports coaches, physiotherapy departments, pain clinics, doctors and other medical practitioners. Terminology Guide: •EMS: Stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation (sometimes also called Electronic Muscle Stimulation). •Pulse Rate: Pulses Per Second. •Pulse Width: The pulse width is how wide each pulse is. It's measured in extremely small intervals called microseconds. •Amplitude: The amplitude is what you feel when you "turn the unit up". It's what causes the "buzzing" sensation of the TENS to go higher or lower. •SDR: Strength-Duration and Rate modulation. SDR consists of alternating modulated intensity (amplitude) and pulse rate so that one parameter is always increasing while the other is decreasing and vice-versa. •SDW: Strength Duration and Width modulation.
